Abortion Providers, Big Apple Advertising Firm to Launch $10 Million Campaign to Combat Anti-Choice Messages

The new ad campaign stresses the fact that abortion clinics even exceed the sanitation requirements of businesses such as nail salons.

NEW YORK – The American Association of Abortion Providers (AAAP) and Manhattan’s J. Arthur Bosch Agency are kicking off a $10 million campaign this month to counteract the nation’s anti-choice propaganda machine.

The campaign, titled “Cleaner Than,” will feature print, television, radio and Internet advertising. The purpose of the campaign is to override some of the anti-choice stereotypes of the abortion industry, including the notion that it is a largely unregulated field. Print ad headlines include: “What’s cleaner than your neighborhood nail salon?” “What’s cleaner than your vet’s office?” and “What’s cleaner than your son’s room?” At the bottom of each print ad, the tagline states: “Your local abortion clinic.”

Robert Neillson, creative director for J. Arthur Bosch, said he is excited about the new campaign. “The AAAP is letting the public know, through this campaign, that abortion providers know what a bottle of Lysol is, and the government doesn’t have to strong arm them into using it every now and then.”

Michelle Gooding, public relations director for the AAAP, said the industry as a whole has been dogged by erroneous anti-choice propaganda that clinics are unsanitary and unsafe. “As far as the Internet rumors that there is not adequate access to emergency equipment at abortion clinics – that is categorically untrue,” she said. “Everyone knows medical emergency equipment is only an ambulance ride away.”

She added that she believes the campaign will set unfounded rumors about the industry to rest. “There is just so much more flexibility in this industry,” she said. “You don’t have to be an ob-gyn to perform an abortion. You can be an allergist, or a chiropractor or a psychiatry resident moon lighting a couple of days a week to pay off your student loans. We aren’t restricted by the same rules a hospital or regular clinic would be, and that flexibility allows us to have more clinics out there to serve you.”

Anti-choice activists who have seen the campaign are already crying foul over supposed inaccuracies. “The campaign says they are cleaner than a vet’s office,” said Thomas Fontenot, president of Journalists for Life. “But the truth is your local veterinarian’s office is subjected to more stringent regulations than an abortion clinic would be.”

Gooding said she is not surprised by reactions on the part of the anti-choice movement. “Why can’t they just accept what we say and save women’s lives in the process?”

Pregnant Woman Awarded '518 Dads' from Catholic Hospital That Refused Her Morning After Pill

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. -- Meredith Strong won a landmark parental support award from Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Hospital last week after they refused to give her a morning after pill when she discovered she was pregnant six months ago.

As part of the court order, the 518 staff members of the hospital are required to be "surrogate fathers" to her unborn child. Staff members must help Strong with paternal duties, such as prenatal care and education, in addition to financial responsiblities.

"It makes me happy that this baby is finally experiencing some justice in this world," said Strong, a dance major at the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAH). Strong discovered she was pregnant after a one-time encounter with a classmate. "He hasnt' shown a lot of interest," she said of the father. "And I don't want to force our way into his life," Strong said.

Although Strong said she is pleased with the outcome of the case, she said she has been less than happy with some of the staff's commitment. "George Hannah, who is over the janitorial department, went with me to La Maze last night, and he just doesn't seem too committed to his role as father. I kept having to yell at him to pay attention and help me breathe. I hope he shows more interest at the La Leche meetings."

Hannah conceded that his relationship with Strong has been tense, so far. "She made me kind of nervous. I don't have a lot of experience with pregnant women," he said. "After the class, she made me take her by Sonic and buy her a Cherry Cheescake Shake. Then she yelled at me because they forgot the cherry and straw. I don't know, I think this is going to be a very difficult pregnancy for me."

Carol Pironia, a registered dietician at the hospital, has been assigned to help Strong with her diet. "This could be very rewarding for both of us, but she won't take my advice. She drinks six or seven Dr. Peppers a day, and nothing I say convinces her otherwise," Pironia said. "I tried to wrestle a six-pack away from her at Kroger, but people started staring, so I just gave in to her. Who wants to wrestle a pregnant woman? It's like I have been given all this responsibility as a dad, but no authority."

Dr. Peter Hesse, a resident at Our Lady of Angels, has been running late-night errands for Strong, getting her everything from mixed berry flavored Tums to salt and vinegar potato chips. "I've never been a father before," he said. "This is hard work. I really hope once the baby comes, she will baptize him and raise him Catholic. I don't though, I'm just the dad. I don't have a lot of say so in the matter."

The American Association of Abortion Providers (AAAP) Gears Up for Weekend in Miami

AAAP to Enjoy Weekend of Fun, Fellowship and Professional Development in Miami.

In honor of the 33rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, here is a story catholicnews covered last year.

MIAMI -- The American Association of Abortion Providers (AAAP) is getting ready to enjoy some fun, sun, networking, and professional development when the 5th Annual Summer Convention kicks off, Aug. 1, at the Grande Pointe Resort in Miami.

"We started this association so that our members could get the latest industry news and information, and sharpen their professional skills," said Gina Morton, 2005 president of AAAP. "Abortion providers are important to this nation's economy. Many people don't realize it, but abortion providers pump tens of thousands of dollars into the economy every year. This convention itself will inject thousands of dollars in revenue into the local economy."

While in Miami, members will have the opportunity to attend a wide array of professional enrichment courses and seminars, including: "Marketing Abortion in Inner-City Neighborhoods," "Spanish 101: Publicizing Your Clinic to the Immigrant Market," "PR Focus: Pass the Margaritas: Combating Post-Abortive Depression," and "Governmental Affairs: Is Your State Pro-Parent?"

"We want to train our members in the latest public relations techniques and skills," said Don Lerner,AAAP public relations director. "Fortunately for us, the media has not scrutinized our industry in the same way they have others, such as the pet store or manicure boutique industries, for example. However, there may come a day when the media may do investigations of abortion clinic cleanliness, industry ethics, or the suicide rate of women who have had abortions. So, when and if that day comes, our members will be ready to get their message out there."

Lerner said this convention is a must for abortion providers. "We want our people to get their clinics and services into communities. We need to advertise more and be proud of what we do. Look at how the cigarette industry, and convenience stores such as Seven-Eleven got into poorer Urban areas and really set up shop. We need to do that.We need to be right there providing our services."

The association is even selling shirts as part of a new PR initiative. The pink baby doll shirts are studded with the rhinestone message, "I Had One. So *&%$# What?" "We are sending complimentary t-shirts to Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan. It would be so awesome to open up US magazine one day and see a picture of one of these ladies wearing one of our shirts, and walking their dogs. We hope that will happen," said Lerner. "It doesn't even matter if these ladies have even had one. We think the shirt will be so popular, girls will say they did, even if they didn't!"

For her part, Morton said she can't wait for the event. "It will be so great to network with other abortion providers. We are so lucky to be living in a post-Roe v. Wade economy. Let the margaritas flow!"
